As the centre of Theravada Buddhism in South Asia for over a millennium, it is home to some of the most sacred and architecturally remarkable religious monuments ever built, including the Ruwanwelisaya Dagoba, the Jetavanaramaya, once one of the tallest structures in the ancient world, and the revered Sri Maha Bodhi, grown from a cutting of the original Bodhi tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment.
